Infected Eye Care for Dogs

There can be various causes for your dog's eye infections. If you notice extreme redness of the eyes, with some excess of abnormal drainage, inflammation and sensitivity, veterinarian attention may be needed. If a chronic eye infection is not treated, the eye condition can become progressively worse.
  1. Causes for Infections

    • Most often, an eye infection can be the result of allergies to grass, pollen and other elements, as well as viruses, bacteria or fungi. Foreign materials in the eye as well as trauma can lead to an infected eye.

    Eye Medications

    • The infection may be treated with eye drops or ointments such as an antibiotic or hydrocortisone eye medication or a glucocorticoid steroid eye drop. Ointments are placed into the space behind the lower eyelid and eye drops can be placed on the eyeball. Eye drops are applied every few hours while ointments are applied only two or three times daily.

    Other Treatments

    • Along with eye ointments and drops, your veterinarian may prescribe an oral antibiotic, anti-inflammatory or an oral steroid, depending upon the type and severity of the eye infection.
