Side Effects of Doxycycline 100mg on Dogs

Doxycycline is used by veterinarians to treat dogs suffering from a variety of infections. Doxycycline is one of the tetracycline group and is effective against certain bacteria, chlamydia and other organisms. A 100 mg doxycylcline tablet is used to treat a 10 kg dog. If you suspect your dog is experiencing any side effects when taking doxycycline, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
  1. Oesophagus

    • Doxycyline can cause irritation, inflammation or ulceration of the oesophagus. Your veterinarian will advise that you give the drug to your dog with food to minimize these effects.

    Vomiting and Diarrhea

    • When the tablet dissolves it creates a mildly irritant solution which may make your dog feel nauseous, vomit or have diarrhea. This effect can be reduced by giving the tablet with food and most manufacturers advise that it is not given to dogs known to have gastrointestinal problems. If your dog develops vomiting or diarrhea while being treated with doxycycline, stop giving the tablets and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

    Skin

    • If your dog is exposed to strong sunlight or ultraviolet light while being treated with doxycycline it may develop an inflamed or itchy skin reaction called photodermatitis. This is due to the drug which has penetrated the skin cells reacting with light to create an allergic reaction. This condition is particularly seen in dogs with thin or pale coats.

    Teeth

    • If your dog is under 6 months of age when it is treated with doxycycline then it may have yellowish discoloration of the secondary teeth when they emerge through the gums. This effect is seen less with doxycycline than with other tetracyclines as it binds less strongly with the calcium of the developing teeth.
