How to Deworm With Interceptor

Interceptor, the brand name for milbemycin oxime, is one of the medications available from your veterinarian for the treatment of worms in dogs and cats, according to Interceptor.Novartis.us. Interceptor is marketed as being effective against four types of parasitic worms: the roundworm, hookworm, heartworm and whipworm. Deworming your pet should begin as early as when it reaches 4 weeks old.

Instructions

  1. Deworming Puppies/Dogs

    • 1

Call your veterinarian to have your puppy or adult dog tested for parasites prior to administering Interceptor.

    • 2

Bring in a stool sample from your dog to have it diagnosed for the presence of any existing worms or parasites.

    • 3

Have a complete blood count performed on your dog to test for anemia and presence of heartworms. When all tests are complete and results have come in, the treatment plan is put into effect for deworming your puppy or dog with Interceptor.

    • 4

Administer Interceptor orally to your puppy. Dosage is dependent upon the weight and size of your dog. Interceptor is available in flavorful chewy tablets or pill form. Most dogs willingly accept the chewable tablet as a treat. If there is hesitation, the tablet or pill can be inserted in food and administered. Per the recommendation of your veterinarian, a dog or puppy may begin a deworming regimen as early as 4 weeks old, and then every two weeks thereafter until completely dewormed.

    Deworming Kittens/Cats

    • 5

Call your veterinarian first as you would for a puppy or dog in order to have your cat or kitten go through a thorough examination.

    • 6

Provide a stool sample for your veterinarian to do a fecal check, at which time a blood test may be performed as well to rule out anemia and possible heartworm. Treatment with Interceptor does not begin until all tests results are conclusive for parasitic worms.

    • 7

Begin deworming your kitten with Interceptor as early as 6 weeks old or as prescribed by your veterinarian. Follow-ups may be required every two weeks or until the kitten is completely free from worms.

    • 8

Administer the flavor tabs of Interceptor to your kitten or adult cat every month at the same time each month, until all tests have proved your pet is free from infestation.
