Dog Constipation Symptoms

If your dog is constipated you will be able to notice certain behavior. It is normal for animals to have constipation from time to time, but it could be harmful if it remains untreated or continues for a long time. Symptoms of constipation include not defecating regularly, not walking normally or acting lethargic.
  1. Dog Is Not Defecating

    • Dogs should defecate at least once every two days. If your dog fails to do so, it is probably constipated. Dogs seem to have daily patterns and will usually stick to them fairly closely. Pay attention to these patterns to quickly diagnose any problems.

    Physical Symptoms of Constipation

    • The dog will act uncomfortable if it is constipated. It will have difficulty walking and even have an abnormal gait. It may be more lethargic than usual and whine more frequently. Look for behavior that is not normal for your dog.

    Emotional Symptoms of Constipation

    • The dog will be reluctant to perform physical activities. It will show a loss of appetite and show signs of mental stress. A healthy dog will eat many times throughout the day. If the dog dish is staying full, keep an eye on him to see if he is exhibiting any other signs of constipation. Walking around with its tail between its legs may be a sign of stress. Any one of these symptoms by itself could be nothing or a symptom of another problem. Watch your dog's behavior if he has one symptom and see if he exhibits others.
