Dachshund Breathing Problems

Dachshunds are prone to several canine diseases. Some of these could cause a change in your dog's breathing. If your dog is having serious difficulty breathing, it should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.
  1. Heart Disease

    • Dachshunds are prone to heart disease. Symptoms of canine heart disease include changes or difficulty in breathing.

    Hypothyroidism

    • Hypothyroidism, common in dachshunds, is the inability of the thyroid gland to produce the hormones that control the metabolic rate. The absence of these hormones could cause decrease in heart rate, breathing, and body temperature.

    Mitral Stenosis

    • Mitral stenosis is a heart valve insufficiency. A weak heart valve allows blood to flow the wrong way, enlarging the heart. When it can no longer swell any longer, the dog will collapse. Difficulty breathing is one of many symptoms of this problem.
