Chihuahua Care Tips

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog and have an engaging and people-friendly temperament. Because of their size, they are popular in urban environments. Chihuahuas, like any pet, require maintenance and care to be kept in optimal health and disposition. Follow some basic Chihuahua care guidelines to keep your pet happy and healthy.
  1. Grooming

    • Long-haired Chihuahuas require more grooming than the smooth-haired variety of Chihuahua. A long-haired Chihuahua will require grooming and brushing several times a week to keep its coat clean and mat-free. Use a rubber slicker brush or grooming glove on short-haired Chihuahuas. A cushioned natural bristle brush and a medium-toothed comb are perfect for longer-haired dogs.

    Winter Clothing

    • Chihuahuas do not grow the thick fur coat that some dogs sport in the winter. Outfitting your Chihuahua in clothing during cold months will help keep your dog warm, comfortable and less prone to sickness. A dog coat can be a good choice for rainy weather and the cold. Measure your Chihuahua to determine the right size for a jacket. Coats prevent fur from getting matted and keep the dog warm on a cold day. Dog sweaters are a lighter alternative to coats and can be cheaper. Dog sweaters keep Chihuahuas warm and are comfortable and easy to wear. Dog boots help protect paws from cold weather and harsh terrain. Boots also help absorb shock that can lead to knee problems to which Chihuahuas are prone.

    Exercise

    • The Chihuahua is a small dog but it still needs active time and a daily walk. Without daily walks, Chihuahuas are more likely to exhibit behavior issues or neurotic problems. You can give your Chihuahua some off-the-lead playtime in a safe, open area or in a large fenced-in yard.

    Diet

    • Chihuahuas do not need a special diet but they can be picky. To avoid eating issues, choose a high-quality dog food with small pieces made for toy breeds to chew. Breeders recommend a lamb and rice diet, which tends to be hypoallergenic.
