Holistic Remedies for Fleas

Fleas have been a nuisance to man and beast for thousands of years. Although chemical warfare is the prominent method used to fight these parasites, there are alternative, more natural and holistic remedies to these disease-carrying vermin. Knowing some of these holistic alternatives can offer you another option to dangerous poisonous chemicals.
  1. Citronella

    • Citronella oil is an effective natural repellant.

The strong odors of certain plants can be a natural and effective deterrant to fleas. Citronella is a natural chemical compound derived from lemon-scented grass that grows in southern Asia. The odor is repulsive to fleas and will repel them for as long as the scent lasts.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil, when used carefully, can be a good alternative to man-made chemicals.

Tea tree oil is a very powerful flea repellant that will also clean and invigorate the skin and hair. It can be added to a bath, or applied as a mist, or even rubbed into the hair or skin, just take care to dilute it as the concentrated essential oil can be quite caustic and even dangerous. Dilution to a concentration of 2% with water is recommended, and avoid using it in large quantities or on or near the ears, as it can cause hearing loss. Again, the repellant nature will last as long as the odor.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar is another holistic choice.

Using apple cider vinegar as a body wash is an excellent choice for a natural flea repellant. Fleas do not like the smell or the taste, and a once weekly bath will help repel fleas for days. Dilute with water, using a stronger solution for heavier infestations.
