How Do I Give Medication to Dogs Following Dental Extractions?

Dogs that have had dental work done are usually sent home with medication to ease pain and swelling or aid in healing. Administering this medication can be a little intimidating. Hiding the pill inside wet dog food or a treat is a common method, but not all medications can be given with food. With a little preparation, medicating your dog can be done quickly and simply.

Instructions

  1. Giving Medication in Pill Form

    • 1

Place one hand over the dog's muzzle, lightly grasping the upper jaw. Avoid placing your fingers near any area where a tooth has been extracted. Carefully folding your dog's lip over its teeth will discourage it from biting should you accidentally touch a tender spot. Additionally, speaking in a reassuring manner or praising your dog will help it remain calm.

    • 2

Lift your dog's head so that the nose points toward the ceiling.

    • 3

Open your dog's mouth by applying pressure to the lower jaw with your other hand, again avoiding any area where a tooth has been extracted. In the same movement, deposit the pill in the back of your dog's mouth.

    • 4

Hold your dog's mouth closed for a moment. Blow slightly on its nose, or gently rub its throat, prompting your dog to swallow the medication.

    Giving Medication in Liquid Form

    • 5

Have your dog sit in a comfortable position.

    • 6

Place the medicine dropper inside your dog's mouth. Position the dropper between your dog's cheek and gums.

    • 7

Squeeze the medicine dropper a little at a time so your dog is able to swallow all the medicine.
