Natural Remedy for Dog Hip Problems

If your dog is constantly limping, it may have hip problems, which can be quite common in dogs. Take it to your veterinarian for a full checkup. In the meantime, natural remedies may offer some relief.
  1. Fish Oil Supplements

    • Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are lacking in many dog's diets, even dogs who are given omega-3-enriched dog food. While it's great that dog food manufacturers are adding omega-3 to some dog foods, generally they aren't adding enough. In a study reported by the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, arthritic dogs who were given fish oil supplements for six weeks were able to rise more easily from a resting position. After 12 weeks they had an improved ability to walk.

    Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid

    • These substances, which also can be given to dogs in the form of supplements, are grouped together because they are often put together into one supplement. Veterinarian Nancy Kay of Speakingforspot.com recommends these supplements for all dogs with arthritis or joint problems.

    Diet

    • If your dog is overweight, help him slim down to ease his joint pain. Even if your dog is at optimal weight, removing most grains from his diet may provide relief from joint pain.
