Food That Makes a Dog Sick

Feeding your dog small amounts of healthy human food is perfectly acceptable, as long as you don't give anything harmful. Unfortunately, quite a few foods can cause sickness and illness if your dog ingests them. What you may think is healthy for your pooch could actually be otherwise. Knowing what foods will make your dog sick is advantageous, so you can avoid giving them.
  1. Grapes and Raisins

    • Although they are quite healthy for humans, grapes and raisins can be seriously toxic to canines, claims Find Out About Dogs. Veterinarians have not been able to pinpoint exactly what causes the grapes to be so harmful; however, they do know that dogs typically have severe reactions after ingesting them. For instance, vomiting usually occurs a few hours after ingestion, followed by lethargy and abdominal pain. Grapes and raisins cause damage to the kidneys, which can ultimately end in their inability to work. The kidney failure can actually cause the dog's death.

    Onions

    • Onions in any form are dangerous to dogs if ingested. According to Doctors Foster and Smith, onions contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which are harmful to dogs and can cause anemia. Anemia is a condition in which a dog possesses inadequate amounts of red blood cells. This condition occurs after eating onions because they actually cause the red blood cells to rupture. Dehydrated onions and onion powder are present in a lot of human food; therefore, read the ingredients of any product carefully before you consider giving it to your dog.

    Chocolate

    • Chocolate consumed by dogs can cause a variety of issues for the canine. Dogs that eat chocolate typically experience vomiting and diarrhea, in addition to increased heart rates. These problems are likely caused by the caffeine and theobromine, or theophylline, that are present in chocolate. A dog that ingests chocolate may twitch and become hyperactive and can even have a seizure and go into a coma.

    Macadamia Nuts

    • Lethargy, vomiting and muscle weakness are some of the most common problems caused by the ingestion of macadamia nuts. The Doctors Foster and Smith website states that an unknown toxin is to blame for the harm caused by macadamia nuts. Depending on how many nuts the dogs ingest, symptoms can occur within half a day of the nuts being eaten.
