The Toxicity of Pen Ink for Puppies

A puppy eats just about anything. While you should call a veterinarian or poison control line when you suspect your puppy has ingested a toxic substance, ink from a pen typically is not poisonous and should not harm your dog.
  1. Pen Ink Ingredients

    • The ink in pens usually is not considered poisonous.

Pen ink is a combination of dyes, solvents, pigments and water. In general it is not considered poisonous, according to the MedLine Plus website. If more than an ounce of ink is consumed treatment may be required.

    If Poison is Suspected

    • You can call your veterinarian for advice.

If you suspect your puppy has ingested a harmful amount of ink, immediately remove him from the source, recommends Pet MD. Do not induce vomiting because doing so may worsen the problem. Contact your veterinarian for advice or call the Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

    Recovery

    • Report changes in your pets behavior to your veterinarian.

Because pen ink is not considered toxic, it is likely your puppy will recover, according to MedLine Plus. An intestinal blockage as a result of ingesting the plastic from the pen is more likely to cause serious problems. Vomiting or a lack of appetite or any change in behavior should be reported to your veterinarian.
