Nutrition for Dogs With Cushings Disease

Cushing's Disease, or hyperadrenocorticism, is a disease identified by the production of too much adrenal hormone, specifically corticosteroids. This disease can cause increased drinking and appetite, high blood pressure, hair loss and a pendulous abdomen. Adjusting a dog's diet can alleviate some symptoms.
  1. Protein

    • Start with a simple diet. Foods that are high in protein are recommended, though when it comes to fat and fiber, less is better.

    Potassium

    • Include more high-potassium foods in the dog's diet, especially if the dog is on medication for Cushing's. Examples of foods rich in potassium are beans, potatoes with the skin and broccoli.

    Raw Food

    • Feed the dog more raw foods. According to Dog Pro, a diet of raw meat and vegetables may be successful in treating Cushing's in dogs.

    Vitamins

    • Ask the vet about vitamin supplements. Because Cushing's compromises the immune system, vitamin supplements can help, especially vitamins C and E, as well as antioxidants. Consulting the vet is especially important if the dog is on medication.
