How to Insert a Dog's Eye Drops

Having a dog for a pet can be a very rewarding experience for pet owners. Certain dogs can offer companionship and add warmth and personality to your home. However, taking responsibility for a dog is not without its challenges. For example, your dog could develop health issues that involve daily care, such as an eye condition that requires you to insert drops into your dog's eye. The better prepared you are for a process like this, the easier it will be for you and your dog.

Instructions

Talk with your veterinarian about the drops you're using for your dog before inserting them. Only use drops prescribed or recommended by your vet and follow their instructions carefully.

    • 2

Add a few drops of saline solution to a clean cotton ball and use it to remove any residue or gunk from around your dog's eye.

    • 3

Read the instructions for the eye drops before beginning. Many will require you to shake them before using.

    • 4

Hold your dog's head firmly with your thumb above his eye and your fingers around his jaw. Your index finger and thumb can be used to gently hold your dog's eye open.

    • 5

Place the bottle of eye drops above your dog's eye with your other hand. You will need to be close when administering the drops, but be very careful not to touch your dog's eye with the plastic tip. It will cause irritation or damage.

Squeeze the bottle of eye drops gently while holding it above your dog's eye. Only administer as many drops as was recommended by your veterinarian. Once the drops are in the eye, you can release your dog and allow him to blink.
