Pregnant Chihuahua Symptoms

Pregnant Chihuahuas have a relatively short gestation period and begin showing symptoms of pregnancy very soon after conception occurs. Since Chihuahuas are small dogs with narrow pelvises, pregnancy can be a dangerous time for them, and it is important to identify pregnancy as soon as possible.
  1. Stomach Swelling

    • Within three weeks to a month after conception, a pregnant Chihuahua's stomach will begin to swell and harden, taking on a distended appearance. During the gestation period, which is approximately 58 to 60 days, the dog's stomach will continue to expand.

    Behavioral Changes

    • Pregnant Chihuahuas begin sleeping and eating more than usual early on in the pregnancy, in response to the body's increased need for nutrition and energy to support the developing litter. Chihuahuas will become increasingly less active as the pregnancy progresses.

    Other Symptoms

    • A pregnant Chihuahua's nipples will also become more prominent as the pregnancy progresses, in preparation for lactation. Pregnant Chihuahuas may also become less interested in the activities around them as they focus their energy and attention on preparation for the impending labor and delivery.
