Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia causes the hip joint to not fit properly into the socket. It first becomes noticeable when a Labrador starts walking in a particular way. The hips will move differently from the rest of the body, causing the dog to look uncomfortable. Over time, it will become harder for the Lab to walk because of the pain.
Gastric Torsion

Gastric torsion, also known as bloat, is a condition that causes the Labrador's stomach to twist. As a result, the gas and contents of the stomach are unable to get out, and the abdomen swells. It is a very painful condition. The dog will exhibit signs of gastric torsion by panting, whining, vomiting, and continually pacing. An owner must seek immediate veterinary help if gastric torsion occurs, or the dog may die.
Arthritis

A number of genetic disorders lead to arthritis in Labrador Retrievers. In addition to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, improper formation of the hip joint preventing it from fitting into the joint socket, also occurs. The joint and socket then rub together, causing painful arthritis. Osteochondritis dissecans is a degeneration of the bones that also is comon in Labs. It contributes to problems with the elbows, ankles, and shoulders.
Eye Problems

Progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and retinal dysplasia are three genetic eye problems found in Labs. Progressive retinal atrophy causes the retina to slowly deteriorate. At first, the dog has trouble seeing when a room is dimly lit, but eventually it has trouble even in a well-lit area. If and when cataracts appear in Labradors' eyes, they must be surgically removed. Retinal dysplasia causes an irregularity in the retina that only manifests after injury or viral infection.
