Common Bulldog Allergies

Bulldogs are great companions. They are sweet, affectionate and loyal, but can face many health problems. Those problems include allergies to food, fleas and chemicals in the environment. Diagnosing these allergies can be difficult; some may present very few symptoms. Topical ointments, drops and medication provided by a veterinarian should treat most of your bulldog's allergies. Taking care of these allergies will not only keep the bulldog healthy, but also make him a happy pet.
  1. Flea Bite Dermatitis Allergies

    • Flea bite dermatitis occurs when fleas bite into the bulldog's skin and leave saliva on the surface. The saliva irritates the bulldog's skin, triggering constant scratching with both paws and teeth. The constant scratching causes the bulldog's short hair to fall out and exposes the broken skin to other elements. Further irritation may lead to more serious skin infections. Once the flea dermatitis is taken care of, owners can try to prevent a reoccurrence with flea medication.

    Food Allergies

    • Food can be a common cause of allergies in bulldogs. They may have difficulty absorbing all the protein in food containing chicken, beef and fish. This may result in allergic reactions such as hives or skin rashes and vomiting. Food with only one source of protein along with a single grain source may be easier for your bulldog to digest. The right food can also help bulldogs absorb the nutrients needed to maintain good health.

    Airborne Allergies

    • Airborne allergies can cause bulldogs major eye and skin irritation. Pollen, dirt, chemicals and fertilizers can cause the bulldog's eyes to become red, swollen, itchy and watery. Bulldogs may try to relieve the itch by scratching at their eyes, causing corneal damage.

Airborne allergens can also cause "Cherry Eye," a condition in which the corner tear gland of the third eyelid folds outward, exposing the sensitive flesh of the eyelid. A veterinarian can prescribe allergy medication to prevent airborne allergies from affecting your bulldog during allergy season.
