Symptoms
-
Demodectic mange (which is also known as "red mange") is caused by a microscopic mite that is usually present in all dogs in small amounts. Usually, they don't cause any problems, but when a dog has an immature or compromised immune system---such as in puppies---the mites can reproduce at an accelerated rate and soon grow out of control. The infected animal usually has red, crusty, weeping areas around the muzzle and sides of the body that are actually mite colonies. Hair loss and intense itching accompany the colonies.
Topical Treatments
-
Neem oil originated in India from the fruits and seeds from an evergreen tree. Neem oil is used to kill the demodectic mange mite on contact when applied topically. Neem oil can also be made into a tea and given internally. Another oil that can be used to fight demodectic mange is lavender oil, made from the lavender plant, and which is considered an effective natural insecticide. Other topical treatments include rinses of diluted apple cider vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Rescue groups have noted impressive results in mange treatment from twice-daily topical baths of diluted Listerine.
Grain-Free Diet
-
The mites that cause demodectic mange thrive in dogs that take in a lot of yeast and sugar, common ingredients in most commercial dog kibbles and canned foods. In order to effectively combat the mites, the yeast and sugar content must be reduced drastically by removing all grains and fruits from the diet, since both can easily be converted to sugar. Many dogs with mange and allergies do well on a raw food diet, with raw meat, internal organs and bones as well as vegetables making up the majority of the diet.
Internal Treatment
-
Since demodectic mange is caused by a weakened or immature immune system, it is often accompanied by secondary skin problems. The best way to combat these problems is to boost the immune system. Some potent herbal supplements can be given, including sarsaparilla, dandelion and Echinacea. These herbs can be given either mixed with food or brewed into a tea.
Precautions
-
Whenever an animal has demodectic mange, it has a compromised immune system. Therefore, if you are treating an animal for demodectic mange, keep it as free from stress as possible. It's also recommended that animals suffering from mange should not be given any vaccinations until the treatment has run its course.

Homeopathic Treatments for Demodectic Mange
Demodectic mange, a mite infestation that are commonly under control in healthy dogs, is often seen on puppies and in dogs that are weak or stressed. While a number of pharmaceutical treatments are available, they often have strong side effects and carry other health risks. Many dog owners prefer to use natural methods for mange control. These approaches tend to be less stressful on the animal's immune system, with little to no side effects, unlike chemical treatment.
