Epilepsy & Its Effects on the Equilibrium in Canines

Just like humans, dogs can develop epilepsy. After experiencing a seizure, the dog could have issues with its balance and coordination. These symptoms are temporary.
  1. Epilepsy

    • A dog with epilepsy experiences seizures because of burst of abnormal nerve experiences in its brain. Epilepsy is usually something a dog is born with and usually first shows up between the ages of six months and three years.

    Symptoms

    • After experiencing an epileptic seizure, a dog will be unsteady. It could stumble often as it recovers, trying to regain a proper sense of equilibrium, according to "The Complete Healthy Dog Handbook."

    Considerations

    • If a dog experiences a seizure near the top of a flight of stairs, it is a good idea to move it a safe distance away. Until the dog recovers from the seizure and regains its equilibrium, the stairs could pose a danger.
