What Causes Yeast Skin Infections in Dogs?

Yeast skin infections are caused by a fungus and are quite uncomfortable for dogs. Yeast infections may present as a rash accompanied by intense itching. Certain breeds of dogs are genetically predisposed to yeast infections and some dogs develop yeast infections as a result of an immune deficiency or allergies.
  1. Inhalant Allergies

    • Inhalant allergies are caused by a reaction to common allergens such as grass, fabric, trees, dander and pollen. Inhalant allergies begin with seasonal itchiness and gradually progress to affect the dog year-round. Allergy symptoms usually begin between the ages of one and three. Inhalant allergies cause the dog's immune system to overreact to the foreign substance, which can encourage yeast to flourish.

    Food Allergies

    • Additives in dog food contain proteins, colors and fillers which may cause allergic symptoms. Food allergies are a common cause of yeast skin infections in dogs and can cause symptoms such as bald spots, rashes, hair loss and itchy skin. Sores may become red and ooze and make the dog uncomfortable. Food allergies manifest themselves in a dog's skin more often than any other organ system.

    Flea Allergy Dermatitis

    • Flea allergy dermatitis is a common cause of itchy skin in dogs and can lead to the development of secondary infections such as yeast skin infections. Flea allergy dermatitis is caused by the saliva of the flea, which comes into contact with the dog's skin when the flea bites. Symptoms of flea allergy dermatitis include severe itching, chewing and biting of the skin, oozing sores and the development of hot spots on the skin, most commonly on the face and hips.
