Canine Cateract Surgery

If you've noticed that the lens of your dog's eye is beginning to look a bit cloudy, you may be seeing a cataract, Once a cataract develops, the only way to improve vision in the eye is to remove the lens surgically.
  1. Surgical Solutions

    • Cataracts are surgically removed.

While cataract surgery was once performed on humans only, it is becoming increasingly common in canines. However, not all dogs are candidates for this type of surgery because of the animal's health or age.

    Procedure

    • Like human cataract surgery, an incision is made in the eye, followed by a hole in the small sac holding the lens. An ultrasonic probe then shatters the cataract after which an artificial lens is stitched into place. Very small fine sutures are used to close the incision.

    Cost

    • Cost of a typical canine cataract surgery averages $1,500 to $3,000. This cost usually includes several days of board and extended care at a veterinary hospital.
