Sentinel & Hair Loss in Dogs

There are over 15 different antigens in the saliva of the flea. Each antigen is capable of causing an allergic reaction in a sensitive dog's skin, according to Doctors Foster and Smith. Flea bite allergies and flea bite dermatitis are common causes of hair loss in dogs.
  1. Fleas

    • The bite and saliva from the flea causes the dog to scratch or bite intensely. Intense itching, redness, hair loss papules, crusts, and scales are caused by flea infestation.

    Dermatitis

    • Dermatitis is a skin condition that is caused by irritation and alopecia in dogs with hair. The most common cause is skin sensitivity or allergic reactions to flea bites, according to Vet Info. (Reference 2, page 1)

    Prevention

    • Sentinel is an oral preparation available at local veterinarian clinics for heartworm control. It is a monthly chewable table that breaks the life cycle of fleas, preventing them from maturing, according to Utah Veterinarian Clinic.
