Sharpei Breathing Problems

Shar-peis are large dogs with flat heads, small sunken eyes and a mass of wrinkles covering the body. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1992. Shar-peis are enormously popular, but they have a number of respiratory issues.
  1. Brachycephalic Syndrome

    • The Canine Inherited Disorders Database lists brachycephalic syndrome as a common issue faced by shar-peis. Their short heads, narrow nostrils and elongated soft palates can cause symptoms that range from noisy breathing to rapidly tiring during strenuous activity. It is mostly treated through weight management.

    Pneumonia in Puppies

    • Dr. Jeff Vidt, author of The Owner's Guide to the Chinese Shar-Pei, indicates that shar-pei puppies sometimes develop bacterial pneumonia when they are between six and 12 weeks old. This may occur because the breed is genetically deficient in a protein called immunoglobulin A, or IgA. The symptoms of pneumonia are chronic coughing, fever and difficulty breathing.

    Rhinitis

    • Rhinitis is a bacterial nasal infection that is characterized by a runny or pus-filled discharge from the nose, sometimes accompanied by sneezing. Dr. Vidt indicates that this disorder is also related to the breed's IgA deficiency. This condition does not severely affect the dog.
