Food for Cushing's Disease in Dogs

Cushing's disease is the chronic overproduction of glucocorticoid, a group of anti-inflammatory compounds. It occurs in middle-aged or old dogs. An owner is able to manage the disease by managing their dog's diet.
  1. About the Disease

    • In a healthy dog's system, the pituitary gland produces a hormone that stimulates the production of glucocorticoid. Cushing's disease occurs because something goes wrong in the pituitary gland and there is too much glucocorticoid in the system. Too much glucocorticoid causes thinning of skin and susceptibility to infection.

    Side Effects

    • When a dog has Cushing's disease, a number of adverse side effects may appear. Skin might become thin and baldness will occur. The abdomen will start to swell and look like a pot belly. Cushing's disease also causes a dog to drink more water and urinate more frequently.

    Diet

    • Raw meats and vegetables should be incorporated into a dog's diet. Natural foods that are high in protein should be fed to a dog that has Cushing's disease. Sodium, fat, purine and fiber should not be fed to a dog with Cushing's disease.
