Essential Oils
-
Essential oils are distilled, typically by water or steam, from the leaves, stem, roots, flowers, bark or other elements of particular plants. Most essential oils are clear, although some are yellow or amber in color. In contrast to what the name implies, essential oils are actually not oily-feeling at all. They contain the "true essence" of the plant from which they were taken and are highly concentrated. The benefits of these oils are generally received through inhalation or applying diluted oils to the skin. Dilution of essential oils is usually achieved by adding them to a "carrier" oil such as olive, grape seed, sweet almond or apricot kernel oil.
Types
-
There are a number of essential oils that are safe to use on dogs, but it is important to make sure these potent oils are properly diluted before using them. Sites like NaturalDogHealth.com and EarthFamily.com have lists of safe essential oils along with their properties and uses. Holistic practitioners believe oils like helichrysum (immortelle) have regenerative powers.
Helichrysum Oil
-
With a subtle honey and floral scent, helichrysum is typically pale yellow in color or red. It comes from Madagascar and is steam-distilled from the fresh flowers of the helichrysum plant. Due to its regenerative powers, it has been speculated that helichrysum may have the potential to increase nerve function to improve paralysis in dogs. Helichrysum oil supports the immune, respiratory, glandular and musculoskeletal systems.
Juniper Berry Oil
-
Juniper berry oil is primarily produced throughout Canada and Europe by steam-distillation of the berries to create a sweet, woody-balsamic essence, and it is often used for its possible detoxifying powers. The oil stimulates the nerves and supports healthy nerve function, which could prove beneficial to dogs with paralysis. Juniper berries are also used for arthritis, gout and rheumatism, as well as respiratory problems.
Considerations
-
Essential oils are extremely potent and should not be overused with dogs. The safe essential oils in diluted form should be harmless to use on most dogs and are effectively therapeutic for a number of ailments. There are some oils that should be avoided altogether for use on dogs, diluted or not. Natural-dog-health-remedies.com lists the essential oils that should never be used on dogs. A patch test of the essential oil being used should be performed on the dog before the actual application. Release a drop of oil on a cotton ball and swipe the inside of a leg. Check the spot in 15 to 20 minutes for any itching or redness and do not use that particular oil if there is a reaction.
