Treating English Bulldog Skin Irritation With Benadryl

English bulldogs are notorious for sensitive skin. Highly allergic, they typically have frequent skin problems including allergies, skin whelps, dermatitis and eczema. By far, allergies are some of the most common complaints from owners of English bulldogs. Dogs inhale the same allergens that humans do and often have far more severe reactions. Reactions can quickly progress, so prevention and early treatment can prove helpful. Benadryl, or diphenhydramine, is the most common antihistamine used by dog owners. Benadryl, along with proper skin care, can significantly reduce your pet's skin irritations and your veterinary bill.

Give your English bulldog Benadryl preventatively two to three times per day before any signs of skin irritation show, especially during allergy season. Keep your house clean and your floor vacuumed and free of dust and small debris. According to veterinarian Dr. Mike Richards, dog owners and vets recommend 1 mg per pound when administering Benadryl for the treatment of a histamine aggravation.

Treat your dog with a flea and tick prevention medication, such as Frontline or Advantix, to avoid parasitic irritations. Skin irritations can occur as a result of flea or tick allergies or excessive scratching. Open wounds can lead to staph infections if untreated.

Clean your bulldog's wrinkles daily with baby wipes or medicated wipes if he seems to be especially prone to skin irritation between the folds of skin. Medicated wipes can be obtained without a prescription from your vet or over the counter at most pet supply stores.
