ProMeris Treatment for Demodectic Mange in Dogs

ProMeris is a medication mainly used to kill fleas, ticks and lice on dogs, but it can also be used for demodectic mange, which is caused by mites. The active ingredients are metaflumazone and amitraz.
  1. Function

    • It is the amitraz that kills the mites associated with demodectic mange. Amitraz causes total paralysis in the mite so that it cannot feed or even stay on the body of the dog.

    Misconception

    • Dogs get three types of mange--demodectic mange, cheletiella mange and sarcoptic mange. ProMeris will only kill the mites responsible for demodectic mange.

    Time Frame

    • ProMeris should be given only once every four to six weeks to kill existing mites and prevent any new mite infestations. ProMeris is too strong for puppies under 8 weeks old.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of amitraz include sudden drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems and staggering instead of walking, according to "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook." Contact a vet immediately and wash the medication off of the dog's skin.
