Focal Seizures and Phenobarbital

Focal seizures, or focal motor seizures, can afflict dogs, commonly those with epilepsy. Dogs that suffer focal seizures may be treated with a drug known as Phenobarbital, which can help prevent seizures.
  1. Causes

    • Epilepsy is the most common cause of focal seizures. Other causes can include organ failure, tumor, trauma, blood sugar complications and genetics.

    Symptoms

    • A focal seizure occurs when one area of the dog's body, like a leg or the face, begins to twitch uncontrollably. At this time your dog may cry out, but the seizures generally only last no more than a minute or two.

    Medication

    • Phenobarbital is often used to treat focal seizures in dogs. The medication is administered daily to the canine and works by reducing the neurological actions that occur in the brain, which are responsible for causing the seizures.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of Phenobarbital vary, but include lower levels of activity and a generally more lethargic dog, increase in sleeping, fidgeting, increase in hunger and thirst and more frequent urination.

    Warning

    • If you think your dog may be suffering focal seizures, seek veterinary help immediately. Also always discuss the proper and safe way to administer medication with your veterinarian.
