Natural Products for Thyroid Problems in Dogs

Thyroid problems in dogs can cause many different problems such as dull coat, dry skin, constipation and lethargy.

According to the Dog Health Handbook, canine thyroid problems usually refer to hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism, the production of too little thyroid hormone, is much more common in dogs than is hyperthyroidism, the overproduction of thyroid hormone.

While treatment for thyroid problems involves administering a synthetic hormone, holistic veterinarians often recommend natural remedies that have been shown to improve a dog's thyroid function as well as help relieve the symptoms associated with thyroid problems. Medication and supplement advise needs to come directly from your vet so as not to cause further harm. Dosages are also decided by your vet based on your dog's weight as well as subsequent blood test results.
  1. Kelp

    • Also referred to as "bladderwrack," kelp is rich in iodine, a crucial ingredient for thyroid health.

When a dog is suffering from hypothyroidism, his iodine levels are too low. The thyroid then begins to work harder to produce the necessary thyroid hormones, which then enlarges the thyroid. The addition of kelp to your dog's system can bring iodine levels back up to give proper support to the functioning of the thyroid.

When the cause of hypothyroidism is iodine deficiency, the disease can usually be treated successfully, according to the Pet Food Industry.

    Aloe

    • Aloe is an effective treatment for both dry skin and constipation.

Rubbing aloe on your dog's skin can help soothe dry skin and accompanying itchiness. Additionally, if your dog has scratched his skin to the point of skin injury, aloe can help soothe and heal the injury. Because aloe tastes bad to dogs, they are highly unlikely to lick it off the skin.

Aloe is also sometimes given internally to cure constipation. It can lead to further stomach problems, so it's important a vet be consulted before ever administering aloe internally to your dog.

    Ginger

    • The most common cause of hyperthyroidism in dogs is thyroid cancer. The treatment is surgical removal of the thyroid, followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

Chemotherapy side effects include vomiting, nausea and general stomach upset. Ginger is known for its anti-spasmodic properties, and is highly effective in alleviating vomiting and nausea.

    Red Clover

    • A member of the pea family, this herb is very high in carotene, vitamin E and a flavonoid called quercetin.

This herb has been shown to be anti-cancerous, likely because of the high levels of vitamins, according to Natural Dog Health Remedies. It is used both internally and externally to help treat dogs with cancer. For internal use, a tea or tincture is made and administered to the dog. For external use, a poultice can be made and placed on dry, itchy skin to quickly alleviate discomfort.

    Yellow Dock

    • Yellow dock is a member of the buckwheat family. It is high in beneficial ingredients such as vitamins, iron, thiamine and tannins.

This herb is a very effective in removing toxins from the body. As a result, it is often used in dogs with cancer.

Yellow dock is also high in anti-constipation properties. It is important to note that it should be used to alleviate constipation only temporarily as extended use can irritate the digestive tract causing the opposite effect.
