Gastrointestinal Problems in French Bulldogs

Gastrointestinal problems in French bulldogs can be troublesome and messy for the dogs' owners. Learning about the types of gastrointestinal issues, along with their signs, can help owners recognize a problem and decide what steps to take in dealing with it. Whether a gastrointestinal illness is acute or chronic, dogs should always be taken to the veterinarian with any signs of health problems.
  1. Signs

    • Many signs in French bulldogs warn owners of a possibly serious problem, such as a gastrointestinal issue. These signs include strange abdominal noises, gas, eating grass, vomiting or diarrhea, drinking a lot of water, poor appetite, fever and bloating. Any of these signs should be looked at by a veterinarian, who can determine what their cause might be.

    Acute Gastrointestinal Problems

    • An acute gastrointestinal problem in French bulldogs means the problem occurs only once. It might have been caused by something the dog ate or drank within the last few hours, and may have minor or severe signs. An acute gastrointestinal condition is not necessarily a cause for concern, although if it's severe enough (such as vomiting-induced dehydration), a vet visit may be warranted. Additionally, acute symptoms can sometimes become chronic if the cause is not determined.

    Chronic Gastrointestinal Problems

    • If a French bulldog has some or all of the given signs on a regular basis, then it has a chronic gastrointestinal problem. This requires more serious attention, frequent vet visits and a great deal of special care from owners. Along with cleaning lots of messes, owners of French bulldogs that have chronic gastrointestinal problems may also find themselves spending a lot of money on treatments.
