Homeopathic Treatment for Demodectic Mange in Dogs

Demodectic mange is a caused by microscopic mites living in the dog's hair follicles. Symptoms of the disease include hair loss and crusty, red lesions on the skin. Though most dogs will self-heal, neem oil can help treat discomfort and irritation associated with mange.
  1. Basics

    • Neem oil is believed to possess anti-microbial properties. As an herbal remedy, it is commonly used to treat skin disease. Neem oil can be purchased online or at local health food stores.

    Method

    • Dilute pure neem oil with almond oil before applying it to the sores. A good rule of thumb is one part neem to ten parts almond. However, it is possible to treat more severe cases of mange with equal parts neem and almond.

    Warning

    • There is not enough scientific evidence to determine the therapeutic value of neem oil. If your dog's symptoms worsen, consult a veterinarian.

    Interesting Fact

    • Demodectic mange mites are usually harmless and can be found on virtually every dog. An animal's susceptibility to mange depends on the strength of its immune system; this is why the disease primarily affects young puppies.
