Side Effects of Gentamicin Ear Drops in Dogs

Gentamicin is an antibiotic used on dogs for ear infections. The drug is only available with a prescription and your veterinarian should provide instructions for administering the drug. Following the instructions precisely will minimize side effects. However, your pet could experience complications from the drug.
  1. Hearing Loss

    • Ototoxicity, a type of hearing loss, sometimes occurs in dogs that take Gentamicin, but the effect is usually temporary. Contact your veterinarian if hearing loss persists.

    Loss of Balance

    • Vestibulotoxicity, temporary loss of balance, is a common side effect of Gentamicin drops. Contact your vet if the balance problems are severe or if they do not go away.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Stop administering Gentimicin immediately and contact your vet if your dog develops an allergic reaction with symptoms such as swelling, rash, diarrhea, vomiting.

    Accidental Ingestion

    • If your dog eats Gentimicin by accident, expect it to increase its fluid intake and urination. It may also pant, have diarrhea and experience some vomiting.
