Treatments for Canine Skin Allergies

If your dog suffers from allergies, it is more than likely it experiences skin issues as a result. Allergies can cause a variety of skin problems, including intense itching, hair loss and inflammation. Fortunately, there are ways to treat your canine's skin allergies.

  1. Soothing Baths

    • Although bathing a dog will not eliminate the allergies, it can help relieve the skin issues that are the result. According to Doctors Foster and Smith, dogs with allergies should be bathed with colloidal oatmeal or hydrocortisone shampoo once every two weeks.

      Soothing gels and salves can also help to relieve areas of inflammation on the dog. If your dog is allergic to outdoor components, washing its paws off when it comes back inside can help to remove the allergens from its feet and prevent them from coming inside your home.

    Antihistamines

    • Antihistamines are commonly prescribed to dogs with allergies. Antihistamines help to reduce the effects of histamine on the dog's body. The Doctors Foster and Smith website claims that antihistamines are effective in controlling allergy symptoms, such as skin issues, in about 30 percent of dogs.

      Many antihistamines are available for dogs and can be found over the counter or through your veterinarian. Your dog might need to try several types of antihistamines until the most effective medication is found.

    Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements

    • Dr. Mark Thompson of the Pet Place website states that fatty acid supplements are helpful in alleviating many of the symptoms of allergies. Omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce the amount and the effects histamine have on a dog's body. They can also reduce the irritation and inflammation in your dog's skin as a result of the allergies.

      Omega-3 fatty acids are not a quick fix, as they can take several weeks before they begin to work. Most veterinarians and pet stores carry the supplement.

    Allergy Shots

    • Dogs with chronic allergies for which other medications have not alleviated might benefit from receiving immunotherapy, or allergy shots.

      Dogs that receive immunotherapy must first undergo testing to determine what their allergenic culprit is. A serum is then made that helps your dog become desensitized to the allergen.

      Allergy shots are extremely effective when used properly but are time-consuming and often expensive.
