How to Help Dogs With Anxiety Using Herbal Remedies

Just like humans, dogs can become stressed and anxious for a number of reasons. Stress and anxiety can make your dog jittery or aggressive. Some dogs become withdrawn and hide. If your dog suffers from stress and anxiety, a veterinarian can help you determine the cause and prescribe medications to help relax your dog. You also can treat the problem using herbal remedies and avoid the chemicals found in many prescription medications.

Instructions

  1. Chamomile Tea

    • 1

Boil 1 cup water and pour into a cup.

    • 2

Add one chamomile tea bag. Chamomile helps relieve stress and induces sleep.

    • 3

Steep for four to five minutes. Remove the tea bag and discard it.

    • 4

      Allow the tea to cool.

    • 5

Pour the cooled tea into a small bowl and offer it to your dog. If your dog won't drink the tea straight, pour it over its food or dip treats into the tea. The tea works well for long car rides during which you need your pet relaxed, but it can be used any time there is anxiety.

    Oatmeal

    • 6

Make a single serving of oatmeal according to package directions.

    • 7

Allow the cooked oatmeal to cool completely.

    • 8

Serve to your dog. Oats calm a dog's nerves.

    Lavender Oil

    • 9

Soak a small cotton ball in lavender oil. The fragrance of the lavender oil will help relax your dog.

    • 10

Dab the cotton ball on either side of your dog's muzzle. Avoid putting the oil directly on your dog's nose.

    • 11

Place the cotton ball underneath your dog's bed or next to its favorite sleeping spot. This will further calm your dog after the oil on its muzzle is no longer effective.
