Skin Problems in Boston Terriers

Boston terriers are one of a few breeds developed in the United States. These excellent companions originate from the English bulldog and the English white terrier. Although they are prone to some skin problems, proper care and prompt medical attention will help your pet live a long life.
  1. Mange

    • The most common skin problem in Boston terriers is mange. Mange is caused by a demodex, a tiny mite that lives in the hair follicles. Symptoms include hair loss and secondary skin infections.

    Mast Cell Tumors

    • Mast cell tumors are sometimes a problem with Boston terriers. They are raw, pink, raised growths that are irregular in shape. These can be malignant and should be removed and tested by your veterinarian.

    Cushing's Disease

    • Symptoms of Cushing's disease include thin and unhealthy coat, potbelly, and increased thirst and urination. An excess of cortisone can cause this disease. Excess cortisone can result when certain medications are used or when a tumor develops in the adrenal gland or the pituitary gland.
