How to Get Rid of Canine Ear Mites

Ear mites are common among animals--especially dogs. The tiny mites live inside of the dog's ear canal and leave behind brown, crusty clumps. These clumps must be removed before you can rid the dog of the ear mites. You may want to see your veterinarian if you have never dealt with ear mites before, but there are natural and over-the-counter medications that work just as well as a prescription medication to completely rid the dog of the ear mites.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of plastic gloves. You are going to have to touch the inside of your dog's ears to remove the brown, crusty material.

    • 2

Fill an eyedropper with olive oil and squirt it in your dog's ear. Let it sit for a minute or two and then rub it in over the crusty clumps. This will loosen them so you can flush them out. Repeat with the other ear.

    • 3

Fill an ear syringe with a cleaning solution that will flush out the brown crusty clumps you just softened. You can make your own ear cleaning solution with an equal mixture of distilled water and vinegar.

    • 4

Squeeze the solution into your dog's ear and hold a few paper towels underneath of the ear to catch whatever comes out. Repeat with the other ear.

    • 5

Purchase an over-the-counter ear mite medication or make your own from 9 drops of Yellow Dock Root Extract and 1 tbsp. of water. Squirt it into your dog's ears one at a time. Make sure the dog has its ear tilted when you insert the medication.

    • 6

Massage the medication in the base of the ear canal for five minutes.

    • 7

Repeat as often as instructed on the packaging label, or repeat once every three days for a total of six weeks if using a home remedy.
