Are Juniper Berries Poisonous to Dogs?

If you have dogs or kids, you want to ensure that common plants in your house or garden aren't toxic if either one of these creatures inadvertently performs a taste test. As evergreens, various types of junipers are useful in garden design, whether for purely decorative purposes or as buffers for privacy. Juniper berry toxicity is relatively rare, but can occur in certain circumstances.

    • If your dog consumes a few juniper berries, he'll probably throw up or experience diarrhea and feel nauseous for awhile. However, eating large amounts of juniper berries can result in kidney issues. If your dog eats some juniper berries, watch him carefully for several hours to ensure he doesn't experience a reaction. Call your veterinarian if he devours a significant amount, especially if your dog is older or already suffers from kidney ailments. There's also the possibility that consuming large amounts of juniper can cause abortion in pregnant dogs. Seek veterinary care if your dog is pregnant and eats juniper berries.
