How to Treat Heartworm With Heartguard

When a mosquito bites an animal that has had heartworm larva, also known as microfilariae, released into its bloodstream, the mosquito can then transfer heartworms to another animal. Heartworm is a condition that can be prevented, but, if a dog does become infected with it, it is very dangerous. Heartguard is a medication that can both treat and prevent heartworms from affecting a dog.

Things You'll Need

  • Heartguard
  • Wet dog food

Instructions

    • 1

Take out one Heartguard tablet from the package.

    • 2

Give it to your dog to see if it will eat the pill, which is chewable.

    • 3

Break the tablet up in pieces and put it in wet dog food. Feed it to the dog if it is unwilling to eat the tablet on its own.

    • 4

Repeat this once a month on the same day. This treatment can take one to two years to fully kill off the heartworms.
