Canine Constipation & Milk of Magnesium

Humans and dogs share some health problems in common. They also can be treated with the same medication. Just like humans, a dog experiencing constipation can be given milk of magnesia for relief.

  1. Constipation

    • Like humans, dogs can experience occasional constipation. When this occurs, the dog might not have regular bowel movements for a couple days, according to "The Complete Home Veterinary Guide."

    Causes

    • Constipation can be caused by too little moisture in a dog's diet or by a dog eating garbage or other indigestible materials.

    Symptoms

    • A constipated dog will strain to pass stool. The stool that does pass will be hard and it could be painful for the dog.

    Treatment

    • Milk of magnesia is a safe laxative to give to a dog for constipation. It comes in tablets and can be easily given to a dog with a treat, according to "The Dog's Drugstore."

    Considerations

    • Stimulant laxatives are not safe to give to a dog. A veterinarian can recommend dosages of milk of magnesia based on a dog's size.
