How to Fix Bad Breath in Dogs

Bad breath in dogs can sometimes be the result of underlying medical conditions and should be treated accordingly. Other times, the cure for bad canine breath can be as simple as a regular oral cleansing and proper diet. Always consult your veterinarian before attempting to treat your dog at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Toothbrush
  • Canine toothpaste
  • Water
  • Chlorhexidine
  • Dental Dog Treats

Instructions

    • 1

Check your dog's mouth for any foreign objects that may be lodged in it. If your dog has an object stuck in its mouth, seek veterinary help immediately. If it looks like your dog may have a tumor in its mouth, also see your vet.

Use canine toothpaste, a toothbrush and water to scrub your dog's teeth and tongue. The toothpaste can be found at your local vet's office. Rinse the dog's mouth completely.

    • 3

Spray Chlorhexidine, a prescribed canine medication, into your dog's mouth every day or per your vet's instructions. This can sometimes cure halitosis, or chronic bad breath, which is not necessarily caused by poor hygiene.

Give your dog treats that will help keep its mouth clean. These treats are usually called dental treats. The treats are available at pet retail stores, such as PetCo and Pet Smart, as well as at online retailers, such as Drs. Foster and Smith.

Talk to your vet about changing your dog's diet. Sometimes a change in diet is all that it takes to cure bad breath in dogs.
