Canine Back Issues

Back issues in dogs can be caused by a number of different problems. Dogs may show back pain through a sensitivity to touch, through limping, or simply through lethargy and disinterest. Back problems are common in dogs, and being well-versed in these issues can be helpful in keeping the dog healthy.

  1. Intervertebral Disk Disease

    • Intervertebral disks cushion the vertebrae of the spine, helping the vertebrate protect the spinal column. Intervertebral disk disease occurs when the intervertebral disks become damaged. The disks can expand, placing pressure on the spinal column, or they can rupture. Some signs of intervertebral disk disease include pain, a loss of mobility or a loss of sensation in the limbs. Dachshunds are prone to this issue.

    Meningioma

    • According to Pet MD, meningioma is the most common type of brain tumor seen in dogs. This tumor attacks the membranes that surround the brain and the spinal column, and as they grow, they compact the soft tissues nearby. When this swelling happens in the spine, it can produce pain in the dog's back and neck. While all breeds can develop meningioma, it is typically seen in dogs that are older than 7 years old.

    Spinal Cord Tumors

    • Spinal cord tumors may be located in the bone, on the spinal cord or in the spinal cord. According to the Dog Health Guide, about 50 percent of these tumors are located in the bone. As spinal cord tumors grow, they put pressure on the spinal cord, which can result in back and neck pain, a limp and a wobbly gait. These tumors are more common in medium and large dogs.

    Bodily Injury

    • Back pain can be caused by trauma and injury to the dog's body. Trauma that causes back pain is most often associated with a sudden impact injury. Some of the symptoms of trauma include back pain, limping, lethargy and an abnormal appearance of the dog's spine or body. If these symptoms are noted, the dog should be taken to the veterinarian and receive X-rays to diagnose the problem.

    Referred Pain

    • Referred pain refers to pain that results from one area or organ but is felt in another area. A kidney infection can cause pain that is felt along the dog's back.
