Soloxine, a prescription medication, is commonly given to dogs for the purpose of treating hypothyroidism. The medication, available only from veterinarians, is typically purchased by the tablet. Soloxine essentially replaces a hormone that's supposed to be produced by your dog's thyroid gland, when your dog is under-producing that hormone. This hormone's job is to regulate your dog's metabolism and the energy in his body. Only use the medication for as long as your veterinarian prescribes.
Instructions
Give Soloxine to your dog as directed by your veterinarian. For many dogs, this medication must be taken for life, but in some cases, you can stop giving the medication at some point. Generally, don't stop the dosage until you run out of pills given by your vet.
Watch your dog carefully for side effects while he's on Soloxine. Serious side effects include an allergic reaction characterized by swelling of your dog's lips, face and tongue, a closing of your dog's throat, a breakout of hives or difficulty breathing.
Stop giving your dog Soloxine if you notice any of the side effects listed above. Give Soloxine on an empty stomach about 30 minutes before your dog eats a meal. Do not give Soloxine to your dog. Instead, feed him his food as you normally would.
Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice the side effects listed above. Get your dog emergency medical treatment immediately. If you can't get your dog to your regular vet, go to an emergency clinic.
