What Makes a Dog Sick?

Many things in the home, yard or park can make a dog ill, and it is our job as owners to protect them. These dangers include bacteria, viruses, allergies, poisons and malnutrition.

  1. Bacteria

    • Bacteria can cause many illnesses in dogs, from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever to kennel cough. Bacteria are most commonly transmitted through tick bites or close contact with other dogs.

    Viruses

    • Viruses also are responsible for many illnesses in dogs, including rabies and parvovirus most commonly seen in puppies. Unlike bacteria, viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics. They can, however, be vaccinated against, so it is important that your dog be up to date on their shots.

    Allergies

    • Like humans, dogs are sometimes allergic to things like grass and the ingredients in some foods, and these allergies can make them feel and act ill.

    Poisons

    • Sometimes dogs come into contact with things that are poisonous to them--like chocolate and coffee--and this can make them very sick. Be sure that your yard is free of poisonous plants, and don't let your dog eat anything you can't identify.

    Malnutrition

    • If a dog is not given adequate nutrition, it can become very sick. Be sure you are feeding your dog a diet rich in grains and protein to keep it healthy.
