Owners of both cats and dogs may have an issue with coprophagy, which is a condition characterized by the consumption of feces by a dog. A puppy that consumes cat feces will also come in contact with the cat's litter. Many litters are designed to clump when they come in contact with urine. This litter will also clump when it enters the dog's digestive tract, which could lead to a potentially fatal blockage.
Things You'll Need
- High shelf or pedestal
- Covered cat litter box
- Large plastic bin
- Self-cleaning cat box
Instructions
Place the cat litter box on a high shelf or a pedestal. Make sure the spot is high enough that only the cat can reach it and sturdy enough that it cannot be knocked over by the curious pooch.
Place the cat litter box in a room that only has one entryway. Install a baby gate in the doorway, which will allow the cat access to the litter box while keeping the dog away.
Clean the cat litter box often. The dog will not be attracted to the box and the litter if there are no feces.
Purchase a covered cat litter box. This smaller opening will not allow larger breed puppies to enter the box.
Place the litter box in a large plastic bin. Place this bin inside a closet or somewhere that is more difficult for the puppy to gain access. The plastic bin will make it more difficult for a smaller breed of dog to jump in.
Purchase a self-cleaning cat box. These litter boxes remove waste on a regular basis, which makes the litter smell less appealing to the dog.
