Glucosamine and chondroitin have been used in Europe for decades but are just gaining popularity in the United States as a treatment for joint health. While most commonly used in dogs, cats, horses and other pets can also benefit from joint supplements.

Features
-
Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring in animal tissues, particularly in the joints. They are found in highest concentrations in the cartilage around the joints, making the joints more flexible and preventing the bones from rubbing together, which can be very painful.
Effects
-
In older animals, the cartilage may have worn thin, causing arthritis and hip dysplasia. Research now shows that supplementing with glucosamine and chondroitin can not only reduce symptoms but even regenerate new tissue.
Use in Dogs
-
Glucosamine and chondroitin is used commonly in dogs for treatment of joint disease. Dogs can take capsules designed for humans as well as specially designed animal supplements. Dosage varies based on size.
Use in Cats
-
Cats can also benefit from glucosamine and chondroitin, which can be used to treat arthritis. However, cats require a much smaller amount, and the supplements often must be purchased specially for cats.
Use in Horses
-
Glucosamine and chondroitin have also been used effectively in horses, obviously in much higher doses. Supplements for horses are often mixed with MSM, which is an organic source of sulfur also used by the cartilage.
