Complications From Frontline

Frontline is a tick and flea formula applied to dogs and cats to keep them healthy and insect free. The product contains the active ingredient fipronil, which has been shown to have some mild side effects on animals. Consult your veterinarian before trying any flea and tick killing formula. Do not bathe your animal one to two days before or after applying the product.

  1. Irritation

    • The major complication that has been proven in the use of Frontline is irritated skin, redness and itching. This side effect occurs at the spot of the application. The irritation should only be temporary and will cease a day or two after the treatment. Further irritation may occur as the result of a pet biting or gnawing the areas that were treated.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Frontline and its active ingredient, fipronil, have caused allergic reactions in some animals. The product should not be used if your animal has shown any allergy or hypersensitivity to the drug at any point. An allergy may manifest as excessive irritation of the skin and eyes.

    Drooling

    • If Frontline is ingested by your pet it may cause excessive drooling. This can occur when an animal licks the spot of application before the medication has dried. If possible, avoid the ingestion of Frontline by keeping your dog from mouthing the area of application.

    Extra Complications

    • Frontline may cause additional complications for animals that are in certain conditions. Frontline is not recommended for puppies and kittens younger than 8 weeks old in the United States. It should also not be used on aged or debilitated animals. Frontline in spray form should not be used for animals that are pregnant or nursing.
