How to Use Human Lotion on a Dog

Most dogs love spending time outside, running around, playing fetch or just going for walks. Some of these dogs have little to no fur, or skin in the ears exposed to the sun. Because of this, it is incredibly important to apply sunscreen lotion to the dog's skin. If you don't, it is possible for the dog, just like a human, to burn its skin. Using lotion on your dog also helps prevent its skin from drying out due to harsh wind and other weather conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Squeeze a good amount of sunscreen lotion into your hand. Make sure your dog is standing in front of your when you do this, as you don't want to run around after the dog with a full hand of lotion.

    • 2

Rub the lotion into your dog's skin, working from its hind end toward its front shoulder blades. Massage the lotion into your dog's skin as you would with your own body.

    • 3

Prevent your dog from lying down for a few minutes after the application, as the lotion will stick to just about everything around your home.

    • 4

Reapply the sunscreen to your dog's skin every few hours outside. When applying additional lotion to your own skin, it is a good idea to apply more to your dog.

    • 5

Wash your dog at least once a week. All of the lotion buildup is going to give your dog's skin a slightly oily feel. Washing its skin at least once a week helps prevent a serious buildup of the lotion.
