Tea Tree Oil for Canine Yeast Ear Infections

Ear infections are common in dogs and are usually the result of an overpopulation of either yeast or bacteria that normally live in the ear canal. Yeast infections are much more common and are easily cured with an anti-fungal medication. Some pet owners, however, prefer to use natural remedies for their pets and turn to tea tree oil instead.

  1. Origins

    • Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves and needles of the Melaleuca tree and has been used as a multi-purpose remedy by Australian aboriginal tribes for hundreds of years.

    Healing Qualities

    • According to Home Remedies Web, tea tree oil has antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, and also works to soothe inflamed tissues.

    About Yeast Infections

    • Ear infections caused by yeast fungus tend to be very smelly and produce a dry, putty-like exudate. The inside of the ear flaps will appear inflamed and dry, and the dog will scratch the ears repeatedly.

    Using Tea Tree Oil

    • Place a few drops of tea tree oil diluted in an a teaspoon of olive oil in each ear and massage thoroughly to take advantage of the liquid's soothing anti-fungal properties. If you can hear the oil sloshing around in the base of the ear, you are doing it right. Do not be afraid to use too much, because the dog will shake his head and remove the excess anyway.

    Ear Cleaning

    • Keeping the ears clean allows the medication to have maximum contact with the infected skin and is vitally important for proper treatment. Use an ear cleaner made for dogs before applying any type of ear medication.
