Your dog may not seem worried about her complexion, but canine acne can actually be quite painful. Just as with humans, allergies, hormonal imbalances and blocked oil glands cause pimples and blackheads that, if left untreated, can get infected, causing the skin to feel itchy and sore. Several home remedies for acne on dogs are effective in eradicating acne and make your pooch feel--and look--better.

Regular Cleaning
-
Simply washing the affected areas on your dog will help get rid of acne. Soak a washcloth in warm water and apply it to the affected areas. The warm water helps to open up the blocked pores, releasing the bacteria. Use a mild antibacterial soap and gently wash the areas. You can also use a topical wash that contains benzoyl peroxide, which helps to shrink acne sores. Do this on a daily basis to keep bacteria at bay.
Calendula
-
Calendula is an herb that has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help to fight infection brought about from canine acne. You can get a tincture of this herb at most health food stores. Add 6 to 7 drops of the tincture to 1 oz. of water. Dip a cotton ball or cotton swab into the mixture and apply to the affected areas on your dog twice a day.
Aloe Vera
-
Aloe vera is a plant that has astringent and antibacterial properties. According to Natural Dog Health Remedies, applying aloe vera gel to the affected areas helps kill bacteria and soothes irritated skin. Aloe vera gel is commonly found in health food stores and grocery stores. It is safe to apply to several times a day and works best if applied after washing the acne-laden areas.
Echinacea
-
If you notice acne breakouts on any area of your dog's skin, give him Echinacea in tablet or liquid form. Echinacea helps to build the immune system and acts as a mild antibiotic. Echinacea works best when given as soon as you notice acne breakouts occurring.
