Instructions
Talk to your vet about medication. Benadryl is an over-the-counter antihistamine that can be bought at any drug store. Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory medication that is commonly prescribed by vets when over-the-counter products are not working.
Give your dog a bath with a oatmeal shampoo that you can find at any pet supply shop. The oatmeal in the shampoo is known to soothe and soften the skin to reduce itching.
Consider adding fish oil to your pet's food. Pet shops will carry fish oil supplements specifically formulated just for dogs. The Omega-3 properties in the oil are known to reduce inflammation in the body.
Avoid products that may contribute to the itching. Pesticides commonly found in lawn care and pest control products can irritate the skin. Remove them when possible.
Adjust your dog's food. If your dog has a food allergy, eliminate one food at a time for two weeks until you find what may be causing the itching. Common foods to look for are wheat, corn, chicken, turkey and some dairy products.
