The Side Effects of Deworming a Puppy

If your puppy has worms, she is being robbed of important nutrients and in a short time, may become quite ill if she goes untreated. The most common puppy parasites are roundworms, which are usually transmitted from the mother. Other types include tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms and heartworms. Although it is rare, your puppy may experience side effects from deworming medications. Here are several symptoms she may be experiencing and what you can do to help her feel better.

  1. Diarrhea and Vomiting

    • Consult a vet first if your puppy's health is already at risk.

One of the most common side effects after deworming, is a loose, runny stool. He may experience nausea, which may also lead to vomiting. Watch your puppy closely and give him plenty of fresh water. If the problem does not lessen within a few hours, call your veterinarian. The best way to avoid the chance of side effects is to make sure you administer the proper dosage of medication.

    Excessive Salivation

    • Deworming can cause him to salivate more than usual.

Your puppy may already drool, but if you notice that she is salivating more than usual after deworming has been administered, this may be a side effect of the medication. Even though she is drooling, she may be thirsty and will need access to plenty of clean water. Allow her to drink freely. The problem should pass within one hour.

    Extreme Side Effects

    • Contact your veterinarian if your puppy has a side effect from deworming.

Although rare, extreme side effects may include signs that your puppy is lethargic, has a loss of appetite, experiences seizures or coma. If any of these or other unusual reactions occur, bring your puppy to the nearest vet or emergency pet hospital.
